Chennai Express crosses Rs 100 crore in the opening weekend

Chennai Express Bollywood Stars Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan were over joyed with their movie to cross Rs. 100 Crores in the opening weekend.

Rohit Shetty’s latest romcom has not just created history at the domestic and overseas box office by touching the magical figure in just three days, but has set new benchmarks in the trade!

That the Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer Chennai Express earned Rs 100 crores at the box office isn’t surprising at all. In fact, everyone has been anxiously waiting to see how soon it would enter the coveted Rs 100 crore club and whether it would break box office records of Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger and Ranbir Kapoor’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (which made Rs 100 crore in just a week earlier this year). And yes, the Baadshah’s romcom has done it!

“CE has created history by crossing the Rs 100 crore mark in its opening weekend itself,” tweeted an elated Taran Adarsh. “That also makes it the fastest ever to reach this magical figure. The film was unstoppable all through the weekend. It has shattered previous records and set new benchmarks. Box office break-up: Highest paid preview movie: Rs 6.75 crore; highest opening day: Rs 33.12 crore; day two: Rs 28.05 crore; day three: Rs 32.50 crore. Collected Rs 100.42 crore nett in its opening weekend. Monstrous start!” He added: “Not just India, Rohit Shetty’s romcom fared exceptionally well overseas and has created history in USA and Canada. Collects $ 683,000 on Fri. May cross $ 700,000. Biggest Hindi opener. In Pakistan CE crossed $ 100,000 on Saturday. SUPERB!”

“Going by the way it has taken the box office in India and overseas by storm, calling this film the ‘bullet train’ would have been more apt than ‘Chennai Express‘! By doing a full blown commercial, masala style film after Om Shanti Om way back in 2007 and raking in a phenomenal response, SRK has proven to his detractors that there’s a reason why he’s called the King Khan!” said exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi.

SRK’s dearest friend Farah Khan congratulated him and her discovery Deepika Padukone on the super success of their film on Twitter: “BIG HUGGG 2 @iamsrk 4 an unheard of 100 crore weekend!! Aapki express 2 superfast se bhi tez nikli! Congrats my sweets.”

We congratulate everyone associated with CE for its stupendous success and watch to see when this Express reaches its destination – and where would that be, we wonder!
